I almost always do math work with a pencil. I sometimes ask my students to mark something lightly in their textbooks. Again, a pencil is a good idea. I would suggest a quality, reliable, mechanical pencil with a good, soft eraser. I don't have a sharpener readily available in my dining room. But I won't categorically insist that all work be done in pencil as I have found that some students have more success when writing with a pen. You know who you are. It is a tactile, sensory sort of thing.
I am pretty much a pencil snob. I keep several Ticonderogas in my pencil holder, as I know that someone will inevitably forget a pencil. (and I am beginning to suspect that perhaps they just prefer my Ticonderoga pencils) If you area going to purchase a mechanical pencil, let me suggest a Pentel. I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, August 20, pencil in hand.
